As an Instructional Designer & Human Performance Improvement practitioner

As an Instructional Designer and HPI practitioner, understanding adult learning theory provides me with a foundational understanding of how people learn and how I can design effective instruction. This foundation also provides me with insights into the cognitive, social, and emotional processes that underlie adult learning and can guide my development of instructional design materials.

Additionally, these tools help me develop more targeted and effective interventions geared toward improving individual and organizational performance as a Human Performance Improvement professional. This aids in evaluating and improving past, present, and future processes, which is imperative for creating well-designed interventions that will generate an increase in long-term performance results and an increase in ROI for the organization.

By utilizing these concepts, I have established a framework as a practitioner who can make informed decisions about learning strategies, instructional design, and performance practices.

E-Learning Samples

For e-learning, I've supplied two recent projects I've completed for my coursework in the OPWL program. Both examples consisted of identifying a problem, drafting storyboards and flowcharts, choosing appropriate tools, sourcing content, development, and testing.

Lord of the E-Learning was created with Articulate Storyline, MidJourney, CapCut, ElevenLabs, and Aiva. I produced a scenario-based learning comparing Articulate 360 to Adobe Captivate with a gamified Lord of the Rings theme.

Introduction to Spatial was created using PowerPoint, Pexels, Spatial, SnagIt, and ElevenLabs as a declarative e-learning lesson on the Spatial.io VR platform. After learning about the platform and its many uses, learners are then challenged with a scenario-based exercise that engages memory retention.

Video learning

I also create video learning and advertisements using Camtasia, iMovie, and Renderforest with A.I. tools like Synthesia, Pictory, MidJourney, Runway, Pika, Eleven, Aiva, and ChatGPT.

Video learning is important to break up the repetitiveness of reading materials or lectures. A.I. can be implemented as a facilitator in instructional design to create more engagement and less cognitive load.

Adult Learning

Understanding and utilizing adult learning theory to explain how concepts can improve learning or management performance.

In the two examples provided, I chose to explore VR and how it can benefit Adult ESL students. In addition, a paper on how the workforce should prepare for a multi-generational workforce and why it is important.

The benefits if virtual reality: learning for adult esl students - image of grown woman wearing a vr headset in the classroom
getting better with age: how to manage a multi-generational workforce, - image of a middle-aged woman teaching a small group of different aged employees

Practitioner's Toolbox

A useful practitioner's toolbox is needed for performance analysis and planning of future interventions.

Tools I am familiar with include the Katzell-based Kirkpatrick evaluation model, the Rummler and Brache Nine Box model, and Gilbert's Behavioral Engineering Model.

Documentation & Design

My experience in technical writing for SOPs, onboarding documents, and app extension utilization is another skill helpful for team and stakeholder communication.

Additionally, my creative design skills add more depth to my ability as a instructional designer.

Related Research

During my time in the Arizona State University MAS Film & Media Studies program, I was introduced to theories and concepts which I feel relate to Instructional Design.

A few examples examine ethical A.I. practices, digital actors in the film industry, and the impacts of television on culture.

  • Ethical A.I. - As A.I. is currently being widely used to create and distribute content in Instructional Design. How can the A.I. itself be ethical if humans use it for non-ethical purposes?

  • Digital Actors (Deepfakes) - The creation of digital actors can put real actors out of work and creates questions about actor image rights. This topic should be examined for education and training videos.

  • Micro and Macro Effects of Television - Television, if viewed as an educational tool, reminds designers that educational training content can have a similar impact on learners and, systemically, the world.
